Do trash cans generate trash?
I’m currently in New Zealand on holiday, and went “tramping” outside of Auckland yesterday in the Whaitakere Ranges near Whatipu. The tramp was 6.6km and took us about 4.5 hours to stop and enjoy the views (and rest the legs a bit).
Afterwards, we headed down to the beach (in Manakau Harbour, I believe). What struck me on the beach was how little trash there was. I picked up the few pieces that I found, and when we were heading back to the parking lot, I looked for a can to dispose of the trash. I couldn’t find one, and then I saw a sign stating that the beach was a rubbish-free zone. The sign said to please pack it with you and take home. Of course this meant that I had to take someone else’s trash with me back to Auckland, but it’s an interesting concept. By not placing trash cans at parks, would litter be less of a problem?
